TIAMAT

81" x 86" (2001 - 2002)

This idea was originally inspired by reading "The Hobbit".  When I heard "The Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy would soon be released, I started to read the books, then my husband told me "You have to read "The Hobbit" first!" Smaug, as described in the book, evoked imagery in my mind of a humongous red dragon with a jewel-encrusted belly.  Further research on the internet about dragon anatomy and details resulted in a dragon that no longer really looked like Smaug, so more research was required to find a mythical dragon that resembled what I had created. The description of Tiamat , a Babylonian Dragon, fit perfectly.

The Quilt:

I constructed this piece by using machine appliqué to connect more than 700 pieces. During the piecing process and the machine quilting, decorative yarns were couched onto the surface . Rayon, metallic and cotton threads have been used in the free-motion machine quilting to match or enhance the fabrics and original design.

"Tiamet" was juried into the 2002 American Quilter's Society Show in Paducah, Kentucky, my first entry into a quilt competition. Over 420 quilts were accepted from around the world. It was one of five pieces accepted from Canada that year.

Also accepted into the Canadian Quilters Association National Juried Show in New Brunswick, 2003, and received the  “Excellence in Machine Quilting/ Embellishment Award”.
