Daphne
Daphne was inspired by a doll club
"Lace Challenge". We hand-painted lace one night, then had two
months to complete our creations. I wanted to make a tree-doll, and when I
told my husband about this idea, he started telling me a story about a Greek
goddess that was turned into a tree. I did some research on this and
here's the story:
Arrows from Cupid, one to cause
love, and one to repel it, had struck Daphne and Apollo. Apollo's
aggressive pursuit of Daphne led her to pray to the gods to save her from
him, so they turned her into a tree.
She has a contented smile on her face because she has such a love
of nature.
Her arms have
divided and turned
into long-fingered branches to support the leaves above her head. Her
roots fan out at the base on top of a bed of green decorative yarns. Glass
leaves complete her ensemble.
