Welcome to Blue Moon Fabric Arts!

mlb

My name is Martha Brown. Here you will see several of my Fibre Art creations from 2001 to the present day.

Creative and perceptive as a child, with an often over-active imagination, I've easily found ways to channel this into some kind of artistic expression.

I received a degree in Art from East Tennessee State University in 1977 with a focus on painting and figure drawing, but it wasn't until 1994 that I found an interest in Fibre Art.

This part of the journey started when I was trying to refurbish an old comforter and a neighbor loaned me a quilting book. Within two weeks I was hooked on the technique of cutting up fabrics to create designs.

I started out piecing traditional designs often inspired by the fabrics I found. For the first few years I quilted everything by hand. Several friends and family members received these as gifts.
The journey quickly evolved into creating my own quilt blocks and floral designs. The quilt tops started piling up because the quilting took so much longer than the designing and piecing. And I still felt limited. I traveled to conventions all over the U.S. to find the best teachers for more creative techniques with fabric and machine quilting.
I learned how I could transform my drawings into wall quilts, paint my own fabrics, and apply surface embellishments, and many of my creations became national and international award winners.
It was over 10 years ago, but I still like to say thanks to the teachers who inspired me the most and taught me some valuable techniques:

I now live in Pickering, Ontario, Canada with my husband Kevin and our two dogs, Zena and Zoey. The girls have grown quite a bit since this pic of them as puppies three years ago!

After 12 years of wall quilts, and 8 of those years selling thru art galleries and shows, competitions and awards, I felt like I was simply done. There was nothing left to say or to challenge me. My artistic efforts needed to address new questions.

I returned to my first love of portraying the figure, but instead of the charcoal or pastels and paper I used over 30 years ago, the medium is fabric, with soft sculptures, or art dolls. Figurative Art is another term for this; using the human body, or even what may merely hint at the human figure, to visually communicate something thru pose, character and costume.

Wire and wood supports (armatures) are sometimes incorporated for structural integrity. A wide array of fabrics, trims and objects have offered mind-boggling options.

I've found the joy of creating again, as I walk a familiar path of too many ideas and not enough time.

The galleries on the website, navigated with the buttons above, showcase all items for sale as well as a few of my creations that have sold, been given as gifts or donated for a worthy cause. Several sold pieces have been deleted to make room for new works.
